I remember the scene in "The Search for Spock" when she sailed into the starbase and the people in the lounge turned and stared in shock at the damage. That scene gave me chills. "With her shield or on it"- Enterprise NEVER came home on it.

It always baffled me why the damage was different from one movie to the next, why a blast scar had become a huge bruise, but this picture explains it perfectly.

Well, when you bring in different production people and the studio starts cutting the budget- it was smaller with each film- that kind of thing starts to show up. Apparently, if there was a damaged model- and not something the effects crew came up with- it didn't survive to next movie.

... I understand the "real" reasons, I'm talking about the in-story reasons :XD:

My hypothesis is this:

In the time between The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, the Enterprise most likely had gotten into a few minor border skirmishes with renegade Romulans, Klingons, Orions or Tholians in the wake of the Genesis planet being formed so close to the Neutral Zones and the territory of the Tholian Assembly...

There was no time between the movies. The Enterprise was to be decommissioned.

I've done some digging, and this is officially what happens between the two films (from unused scenes in the script which were placed in the novelisation).

The Enterprise, having left Genesis, travels to Ceti Alpha V to pick up the Reliant's crew.  Afterwards, on the way to Earth, she is met by the USS Grissom which is headed to Genesis, and a transport vessel.  David and Saavik, who are now a couple, transfer to Grissom, and the Reliant crew transfer to the other ship along with the cadets.
Staffed by a skeketon crew, Enterprise continues back to Earth whilst Scotty effects repairs on the hull to prevent any further breaches.  At this point McCoy starts to experience the effects of the mind meld.

The Enterprise doesn't encounter any other adversaries, so there is no in story reason for the extra battle damage.  The producers obviously decided they wanted the ship to look like she'd taken a real pounding, and hoped that the fans wouldn't notice the changes.
